Findings from an April 2013 poll show a strong majority of Minnesotans – 66 percent – support increasing the tobacco tax by $1.50 per pack. The poll found no partisan divide, with strong majorities of DFLers (68 percent), Republicans (65 percent) and Independents (62 percent) all supporting a $1.50 increase.
Our new campaign, which includes three TV ads, bus sides, billboards and an interactive website (stillaproblem.com), details how tobacco is still a big problem in Minnesota for our youth, our economy and our health.
Forty-nine colleges and universities in Minnesota are tobacco-free, representing a growing national trend. Ninety-nine percent of smokers start using tobacco before turning 26, and tobacco-free campus policies are a great prevention tool.
Research shows the price of tobacco is the best driver of smoking declines in Minnesota. A study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that smoking has fallen 29 percent in Minnesota since 1993. Price increases accounted for 43 percent of that drop.
We provide people with free counseling and medications to quit tobacco. Getting help leads to successful quitting, and we provide the best possible treatment to Minnesota smokers. More than 19,000 Minnesotans have used QUITPLAN Services to successfully quit.
