On January 17, Rep. Ann Lenczewski introduced a bill in the Minnesota Legislature that would significantly raise Minnesota’s cigarette tax and that contains a number of other elements that would reduce tobacco’s harm in our state.
The major components of the bill, H.F. 91, include:
- Increasing the tax on cigarettes by $1.60 per pack, with a parallel increase on other tobacco products;
- Redefining “little cigars” as what they truly are – cigarettes; and
- Establishing a minimum tax, equal to that on cigarettes, on other tobacco products.
Tobacco tax increases are proven to prevent kids from smoking and to help adults quit. You can use our online contact form to contact your lawmakers and urge them to support proposals that would increase the price of tobacco products.
