Friday, May 31, is World No Tobacco Day, and QUITPLAN® Services encourages all Minnesotans to make it a day without using tobacco. Free help is available from QUITPLAN Services at 1-888-354-PLAN and at www.quitplan.com.
Begun in 1987, World No Tobacco Day is an international day to raise awareness of tobacco’s harms. Smoking-related disease kills 6 million people worldwide each year – more than 5,000 of them here in Minnesota. Tobacco users are encouraged to go tobacco-free for at least 24 hours.
This year, the World Health Organization is appealing to all the governments of the world to ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship. These guidelines are recommended by the WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, a global partnership of 176 nations that have pledged to reduce tobacco’s harm. A new animated video from the WHO is helping to spread the message.
In Minnesota, all Minnesotans have access to free quitting help through QUITPLAN Services, a program funded by the Minnesota tobacco settlement. Minnesota residents are encouraged to call 1-888-354-PLAN or visit www.quitplan.com to learn more.
