Tobacco PricesHigher tobacco prices help smokers quit, and are the best way to keep cigarettes out of the hands of kids – it’s that simple. Research from Minnesota show that cigarette price increases have been the top driver of smoking declines since 1993. Tobacco: Still a Problem
Tobacco is still an urgent problem in Minnesota. Approximately 574,000 adults still smoke, and the state loses 6,000 lives each year due to tobacco use. Youth e-cigarette use is an epidemic in our state and across the country. Meanwhile, the tobacco industry spends billions annually to market its products nationwide, with more than $100 million of that being spent in Minnesota alone. Secondhand SmokeThe Freedom to Breathe Act was a huge victory for Minnesotans – a strong statewide law to protect people from toxic secondhand smoke at their workplaces. But there’s still work to do, as many nonsmokers are still exposed to secondhand smoke every day. We are committed to reducing that exposure everywhere, from apartments to college campuses. For a current list of colleges with smoke-free policies, visit http://www.healthycampusmn.umn.edu.
Public FundingPublic Funding- ClearWay Minnesota supports public funding for efforts to reduce tobacco use in Minnesota, especially among youth. Recent important programs include Minnesota’s State Health Improvement Program (SHIP), which has given $47 million to local communities to help them combat tobacco use and obesity. Learn more about SHIP here.
FDAIn 2009, President Obama signed a bill giving the U.S. Food and Drug Administration the authority to regulate tobacco products. The FDA now has the ability to accurately inform consumers about the dangers of tobacco products, to further restrict how they are marketed, to force tobacco makers to reveal what goes into cigarettes, and many other powers. ClearWay Minnesota supports the complete implementation of the new law so it can have maximum impact; more information can be found here.
